THE FILM

Oscar Wilde (Rupert Everett), spends the last days of his life in the room of a humble guesthouse in Paris. It is like a vivid dream in which memories from the past come back and take him into other times and places of his life. Wasn't him the most famous man in London at one time? The artist idolized and crucified by the same society? Today Wilde thinks back to his overwhelming passions with sadness and to his relentless need to love unconditionally. He relive his fatal relationship with   Lord Alfred Douglas (Colin Morgan) and his escapes through Europe. He also relives the great regret towards his wife Constance (Emily Watson) after having thrown her and his children into the scandal due to his extreme sentence for his homosexuality. In this journey he is only accompanied by the love and the devotion of Robbie Ross (Edwin Thomas) who stands by him until the end in a hopeless effort to save him from himself and from the affection of his dearest friend Reggie Turner (Colin Firth). THE HAPPY PRINCE portrays, in a completely new way, the most intimate side of a genius who lived and died for love.
