MASPALOMAS

by Aitor Arregi, Jose Mari Goenaga
Country: Spain
Year: 2025
Duration: 115'

Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, is the “buen retiro” 76‑year‑old Vicente has chosen after coming out to his family at fifty. His seaside life of sun, parties, and cruising among the dunes is upended after he suffers a stroke. He finds himself back in Donostia, his hometown, where his estranged daughter Nerea has placed him in a nursing home. Vicente must now give up the freedom of being himself — something he gained only after years spent hiding. Far from the hedonism of Maspalomas, he is trapped in a prison of social norms he seems unable, or perhaps unwilling, to escape. But life always knows what to do… This Spanish film explores how life can divert us from the paths we carve for ourselves. Thanks in part to the refined performance of José Ramón Soroiz as the protagonist, it received multiple awards at both the Goya Awards and the San Sebastián Film Festival.
